The turtleneck trend is back — making your winter look warm, stylish, and innovative

The turtleneck trend is back — making your winter look warm, stylish, and innovative
The turtleneck trend is seeing a resurgence and the garment has been reinvented for this winter, as we see on Bollywood actors Prateik Babbar and Shahid Kapoor, and Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton.(HT Photo/ Yogen Shah)
With the chill in the wind increasing, celebrities are leading the way in keeping stylishly warm. The item of the moment is the turtleneck, an extremely versatile garment that can be dressed up or down. From Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan to Irrfan, Bollywood celebs have been spotted wearing high neck T-shirts or sweaters with suits and jackets. While turtlenecks dropped largely out of fashion in the early Noughties, they are now seen on every trendy celebrity.

About the turtleneck’s history, designer Nikhil Mehra says, “It has a very retro vibe to it, and since every trend had already been followed in the past, I think it was about time for turtlenecks to come into the picture. In the ’70s, we saw it on Hollywood actor Richard Gere — how suave he looked wearing those high necks. During the same decade, American feminist and journalist Gloria Steinem made it very popular.”

Menswear designer Gaurav Khanijo says, “Runways have a lot of influence in setting trends, and if a trend is picked by a couple of designers in the same season, it’s likely to become big. And last season saw a lot of designers experimenting with high necks in their collections.”

The high neck trend maybe back, but like every other trend that comes with a reinvention, the styling of the high neck has changed. “While the high neck trend is back, the styling is different. They are now teamed up mostly with suits and used as a replacement for a shirt and a tie. It’s more of a normcore fashion staple,” says stylist Vikram Seth. “Wear them with a bomber [jacket] and jeans for a laidback look or opt for a suit with the turtleneck for a more dapper you.”

Age and marital status doesn’t define one’s beauty and talent Mamta Trivedi

Age and marital status doesn’t define one’s beauty and talent, as Mamta Trivedi from Hyderabad proved in front of billions in China. After winning the Mrs India title earlier this year, she participated in the recently held Mrs Asia International World beauty pageant and went on to win the crown there as well.
A social worker and yoga enthusiast, the 47-year-old mother of two grown up children was always inclined towards modelling. However, she couldn’t pursue her passion due to marriage and other domestic responsibilities.
“When I was in school and college, I was interested in this field but due to domestic responsibilities, I couldn’t continue. Now that my children are all grown up and very supportive, I took the plunge. Social work has always been my passion and after winning the Mrs India title, I took the opportunity to use my crown to benefit others. I tied up with Roshni Trust and travelled across villages to help people fight depression,” says Mamta, adding, “I even tried to raise awareness at the beauty pageant by doing a monologue of a 16-year-old girl who is suffering from depression for my talent round.”
Sharing her experience about the pageant, Mamta says, “The pre-judging competition was for five days, and very important. The other rounds — national costume, talent round, evening gown and the question and answer round — were held on the main pageant day. Although I was very nervous before going to the competition, the whole experience gave me a new lease of life and I made lots of friends. .”
Mamta also shares, “On stage, the Chinese contestant named me when asked who she thought could be crowned apart from her. I can’t express how proud and happy I felt — it is one of my biggest achievements.” Post her win, Mamta is now focusing on how to reach out to more people to raise awareness about depression.

How to break in new shoes quickly

It's remarkably simple
At the frantic time of year that is Christmas, we often end up making last-minute purchases for social engagements, be it a festive suit, sparkly dress or embellished clutch.
But one of the most problematic items of clothing to buy just before a party is a new pair of shoes.
Because the chances are, those babies are going to rub, leaving you with sore feet, blisters and hobbling home in the wee hours having been unable to enjoy the event.
It usually takes time to break in a new pair of shoes, but fortunately there is a secret to wearing them in quickly.
Then enjoy comfortable shoes that are molded to your feet and won’t pinch, squeeze or rub your toes.
That way you can dance all night, with making sure to show off your best shapes on the D-floor your only concern.
